Mississippi Bowl is back in 2009

  • For the second year in a row, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will host The Mississippi Bowl Sunday, Dec. 6 as the 2009 Mississippi Community College/Junior College state champion and another highly ranked team in the nation does battle. Three fun-filled days of local entertainment, food and football will welcome the teams and their families, friends and special guests.

    “We are truly excited to be hosting the Mississippi Bowl again in 2009,” said Ladd Taylor, Gulf Coast athletic director. “The overwhelming success of the 2008 contest made the decision to come back for a second year a no-brainer.” On Dec. 7, 2008, No. 7 ranked Gulf Coast defeated No. 3 Georgia Military College 41-7 in front of 5,000 fans at Biloxi Indian Stadium.

  • Offensive/Defensive Lineman Camp develops winners

    Ninety-two degrees, not a cloud in the sky, and no breeze.

    For 325 high school football players from all over the southeast, those are optimum conditions to learn how to become better offensive and defensive linemen.

  • Rath takes over as new baseball coach

    A Coast native and former major leaguer is the new head baseball coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Long Beach native Gary Rath takes control of the Bulldogs after being approved by the college’s Board of Trustees this week.

    “It’s a tremendous opportunity to come back home after playing for so many years and be given the chance to lead,” Rath said. “Gulf Coast has a great tradition in baseball and in all of the athletic programs. I’m thankful and humbled that they think well enough of me to lead this team.”

  • Dempster earns NJCAA All-American honors

    Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College pitcher Clint Dempster is a 2009 NJCAA First-Team All-American and part of the MACJC’S All-State & All-Region 23 squad along with Gulf Coast freshman slugger Jeremy Hill.

    Dempster, a sophomore from Thibodaux, La., led the NJCAA in strikeouts during the regular season with 113 and went 6-3 with a 2.84 ERA.
