Rath takes over as new baseball coach

  • A Coast native and former major leaguer is the new head baseball coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Long Beach native Gary Rath takes control of the Bulldogs after being approved by the college’s Board of Trustees this week.

    “It’s a tremendous opportunity to come back home after playing for so many years and be given the chance to lead,” Rath said. “Gulf Coast has a great tradition in baseball and in all of the athletic programs. I’m thankful and humbled that they think well enough of me to lead this team.”

  • Dempster earns NJCAA All-American honors

    Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College pitcher Clint Dempster is a 2009 NJCAA First-Team All-American and part of the MACJC’S All-State & All-Region 23 squad along with Gulf Coast freshman slugger Jeremy Hill.

    Dempster, a sophomore from Thibodaux, La., led the NJCAA in strikeouts during the regular season with 113 and went 6-3 with a 2.84 ERA.

  • Cooper Farris retires as MGCCC baseball coach

    Coming up two wins shy of the 700 victory plateau, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College baseball coach Cooper Farris is retiring from a job he’d held since 1990. Farris, the son of longtime Gulf Coast baseball coach Ken “Curly” Farris, leaves with an all-time record of 698-376-1. That includes 15 MACJC South Division titles, 18 state tournament appearances, 19 trips to the Region 23 Tournament, and one trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in 1991. Farris’s teams also won two MACJC state championships and finished second in the state eight times and in Region 23 five times. He’s also been selected MACJC Coach of the Year twice.

    "Cooper has committed 20 years to MGCCC's baseball program,” said Dr. Mary Graham, vice president of the college’s Perkinston Campus. “We wish him the best as he moves on to another chapter in his life."

  • Holmes wins two straight to take MACJC Playoff Series

    Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College head baseball coach Cooper Farris warned his team not to take Holmes lightly even though his team won game one of their MACJC Playoff Series 9-1 Friday Night.

    The Bulldogs didn’t listen, and two losses later, Holmes (27-20) is moving onto the MACJC State Tournament while Gulf Coast ends its season at 32-17.
