Baseball splits with Southwest

Pitcher Drew Granier deals against Southwest Apr. 1.

Jeremy Hill helped pace the Bulldog offense against Southwest Apr. 1.

The best news about Wednesday’s doubleheader with Southwest is that they got the games played in between stormy weather systems moving through South Mississippi. A break in the weather gave Gulf Coast a chance to add to their MACJC South Division lead, but The Bulldogs could only manage a 5-2, 10-8 split against the Bears.

Gulf Coast (21-9, 8-4) took game one 5-2 behind strong pitching by starter Drew Granier and back-to-back homeruns by Jeremy Hill and Jarrod Cannette in the bottom of the fourth inning. The two long balls by Hill and Cannette were part of a four-run fourth that put the Bulldogs in front for good.

Southwest won the nightcap 10-8 despite two more hits by Hill in a four RBI performance at the plate. Shortstop Matt Bennett also went 2-for-4 including a solo homerun and two RBI’S.

This Saturday the Bulldogs entertain Co-Lin at 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. at Curly Farris Field in Perkinston.
