Bulldogs take 1-0 lead in MACJC Playoff Series

PERKISNTON---Clint Dempster struck out 12 Holmes batters while his Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College teammates scored seven runs in the first inning as the Bulldogs cruised past Holmes 9-1 in game one of the MACJC best-of-three playoff series Friday evening.

Game two is set for 1 p.m. Saturday with game three immediately following if necessary.

Dempster, who leads the NJCAA with 113 strikeouts in 2009, got into a bases loaded jam in the top of the first. However, the Thibodaux, La. native fanned picked up three of his 12 strikeouts on the day to end the inning. He’s now 6-3 on the year after going seven innings and giving up five hits and one earned run.

In the bottom of the first, Jeremy Hill added to his NJCAA leading RBI total with a two-run homer to get the Bulldogs on the board. Hill, a freshman from Long Beach, has hit 12 homers this season to with 72 RBI’S. Gulf Coast (32-15) added five more runs in the inning to take command of the contest. Hill, Jerron Casey, Jarrod Cannette, Corey Groue, and Jan Butler all had two hits in the victory.

Tyler Powell took the loss on the mound for Holmes (25-20). If Gulf Coast can complete the series victory on Saturday they will host the MACJC State Tournament next week.
