Bulldogs take over first place in MACJC South Division

PERKINSTON-Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College needed a doubleheader sweep of Hinds Saturday to regain first place in the MACJC South Division. It wasn't easy, but the Bulldogs got it, winning game one 4-3 and taking the nightcap 10-8 to up their record to 29-11 overall and 15-5 in the division.

In game one, NJCAA strikeout leader Clint Dempster (5-3) chalked up eight more K’S to make it 99 on the season and got the complete game victory. Hinds took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth thanks to a two-run homer by Jason Hicks. However, Gulf Coast answered in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by pinch-hitter Matt Ross. Corey Groue and Jeremy Hill each drove in a run while Jerron Casey had a double and two stolen bases.

The Bulldogs took game two 10-8 as Michael Baxter (3-2) got the win out of the bullpen by giving up only one run in three innings of work. Jeremy Hill added to his team-leading .473 batting average by going 2-for-4 with 5 RBI highlighed by a three-run homerun, his 11th of the season. Matt Ross had two more hits in game two, scored three times and drove in two, while Matt Bennett and Corey Groue also had two hits apiece. Gulf Coast takes on archrival Pearl River Tuesday at Perk with game times at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
