Doubleheader sweep at Southwest seals the deal

SUMMITT-For the third time in four years, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College baseball owns the MACJC South Division.

Gulf Coast needed one win in today’s last regular season South Division twin bill at Southwest to claim the championship and got it in game one by whipping the Bears 13-3 and also taking the nightcap 6-4.

The Bulldogs (31-13, 17-7) will travel to No. 1 ranked LSU-Eunice Monday for the regular season finale before hosting the No. 4 seeded team from the North Division next weekend in the MACJC State Playoffs. If Gulf Coast wins the best-of-three series, they’ll host the MACJC State Tournament the following weekend.

In the division-clinching 13-3 win, Drew Granier (8-3) went 4 1/3 innings and struck out five for the win. Jeremy Hill and Jarrod Cannette both had three hits while Jan Butler and Matt Bennett both had two hits with Butler driving in three runs.

The 6-4 win in game two featured reliever Craig Mackay (1-1) getting the win on the mound with Luke Briley earning his third save of the season. On offense, Bennett added three more hits and Will White had two hits and scored a run.
