PERKINSTON---Under cloudy, rainy skies the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs held their 2010 spring football scrimmage at A.L. May Memorial Stadium. The 70 play event pitted the white team (offense) against the blue team (defense) as the Bulldogs prepare to make another run at the MACJC state title this fall. In 2009, Gulf Coast went 10-3, won its third straight MACJC South Division title, and made it to a third straight MACJC State Title game before losing 75-71 to east Mississippi. The Bulldogs were then defeated 37-26 by Navarro at the C.H.A.M.P.S Heart of Texas Bowl and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA poll.
In 2010 head football coach Steve Campbell will have to replace most of his offense and several key players on defense. In February Campbell and his coaching staff signed 25 incoming freshman.
Among the spring scrimmage highlights were touchdown runs by Chris Corbitt and returning sophomore Eric Wills, a fumble recovery and in interception return by Dominic Ellis, and a couple of bone-jarring hits by linebacker Mario Gaynor.
Gulf Coast opens the 2010 season Sept. 2 at home against East Miss.
