No. 6 MGCCC hammers Hinds 41-6

October 18, 2009

MGCCC linebacker Sammy Brown (27) takes an interception 56 yards for a score in the Bulldogs’ 41-6 rout of Hinds Oct. 18.

PERKINSTON, Ms.---The weather was superb...as was No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in a 41-6 rout of Hinds Sunday at A.L May Memorial Stadium.

The game was supposed to be played Thursday but bad weather forced college officials to move it to Sunday. The change in dates only delayed the inevitable as the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-0) scored 34 first half points and feasted on five Hinds turnovers. Gulf Coast has now won seven straight after dropping the season opener to Northwest.

MGCCC running back Vick Ballard (26) breaks free on a 19-yard TD run against Hinds Oct. 18.

“Today we had a business-like approach to the game,” said Gulf Coast head coach Steve Campbell. “We didn’t execute on all cylinders but anytime you can win 41-6 you’ve got to be pleased.”

Gulf Coast drove 80 yards in 11 plays to open the scoring as Eric Wills bulled his way in from 2-yards out to make it 7-0. A Hinds fumble recovered by Gulf Coast linebacker Brannon Byrd led to his team’s second score, a 19-yard TD gallop by running back Vick Ballard.

In the second quarter the Bulldog defense chipped in as linebacker Sammy Brown intercepted a pass and raced 56 yards for the score to make it 20-0. Ballard, the MACJC’S leading rusher, would later add another touchdown run from 11 yards out to up the lead to 27-0. The sophomore from Pascagoula now has 16 rushing touchdowns this season which is also tops in the MACJC.

The Bulldogs finished off the first half assault as freshman Mark Seymour got loose on a 28-yard TD run to make it 34-0 at halftime.

Hinds (3-5, 1-4) got it’s only score of the game in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Wesley Mounger to Treyvias Alexander.

The Bulldogs answered as quarterback Greg Jenkins and speedy wide receiver Kelvin Bolden hooked up on a spectacular 91-yard touchdown pass to cap the scoring at 41-6. The 91-yarder is the fourth-longest TD pass play in college history. Bolden, a Mississippi State commitment, finished the game with four catches for 194 yards and a score.

MGCCC defensive back Martez Thompson (5) tries to break up a pass intended for Hinds wide receiver Jerrell White (14). White was called for offensive pass interference on the play.

“We wanted to play Thursday Night really bad, but we were able to focus and get the job done today,” said Gulf Coast defensive lineman Wayne Dorsey, who had two sacks and six tackles in the contest.

The victory by Gulf Coast sets up a showdown in Ellisville with Jones (6-2, 5-0) for the MACJC South Division title. If the Bulldogs win it would be their third straight division crown and fourth in six years under Steve Campbell.

“I’m proud of our team’s effort under unusual circumstances,” Campbell added. “Hopefully we’re close to hitting full stride.”

Fans can catch all the action between Gulf Coast and Jones Saturday, Oct. 24 on 91.7 FM WAOY and via streaming audio at www.mgcccbulldogs.com. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
