Bulldog golfers Dennis, Williams compete for low medalist honors
RAYMOND, Ms.---Before the 2010 season began, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College golf team set a goal to "three-peat" as Region 23 Champions.
Mission accomplished...in a big way.
Gulf Coast shot 593 (296-297) to win the 2010 Region 23 title by a whopping 17 shots over second place Northeast. The Bulldogs, which also won the 2010 MACJC State Championship earlier this month, will compete in the NJCAA Division II National Championship at Palm Valley Golf Club in Phoenix, AZ May 16-21.
MGCCC's Skyler Dennis won a sudden death playoff on the first hole with a par to take Medalist honors over teammate Richie Williams after tying with 144 totals. Dennis, Williams and Nic Ishee 151 were named to the All-Region 23 team along with Brandon Robbins 147(Northeast), Alex Rowland 148(Itawamba) and Luke Brown 151 (East Central). Brandon Robbins, Alex Rowland, Luke Brown, Blake Hatfield and Garrett Tidwell qualified for the National Championship as individuals.
"We were in the lead by two strokes after the first day, and the kids were just so focused in the final round," said Gulf Coast golf coach Tommy Snell. "They just took care of business and never looked back."
The two-day tournament was held at Eagle Ridge Golf Course at Hinds Community College.
"With the wind blowing 25 miles an hour and the holes tucked in PGA Tour-like locations, our players really showed patience and great course management skills," Snell added. "Now, we'll have to work hard for the next three weeks and take those skills to Phoenix."
In 2008, the Bulldogs finished 13th at the NJCAA'S and last season Gulf Coast finished 9th.
