MGCCC softball ready to defend Region 23 crown

  • Softball hopes for repeat performance in 2009-10

    After coming off a very successful season that included winning a Region 23 title and going to the NJCAA National Tournament for the second time in three years, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is more than ready to begin fall practice and build on last season’s 28-12 performance.

    “We have a good nucleus of returning players this season,” Long said. “We have to try and develop good chemistry early and have intense practices every day.”

  • MGCCC softball season ends at NJCAA Tourney

    Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College was eliminated from the NJCAA Division II National Tournament Saturday…but not without the Lady Bulldogs putting up a good fight.

    Gulf Coast resumed its rain-delayed game with Johnson County (Kan.) Saturday morning and won 4-3 in nine innings to stave off elimination. However, the Lady Bulldogs dropped a 9-5 decision to Iowa Central that ends their season at 28-12. The trip to the national event is the second in three years for the Lady Bulldog softball team. The 2009 squad featured 19 freshmen and five sophomores.

  • MGCCC goes 1-1 on first day of NJCAA National Tourney

    Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College dropped their first game but bounced back to fight off elimination and get a win at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament Thursday.

    In game one, a 10-5 loss to Blackhawk College, the Lady Bulldogs got solo homeruns from Lindsey Keyes (third this season) and Kayla Moran (first this season) and a three-run homer by Megan Colvin (fifth this season). However, Gulf Coast committed five errors in the contest, with pitcher Brittany Fields (13-4) absorbing the loss. Keyes, Holly Lawrence, and Kayla Tompkins each had two hits.
