Pearl River shuts out Lady Bulldogs 7-0

FULTON---During the 2010 regular season, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College took all four games against archrival Pearl River.

Unfortunately things changed in the semi-finals of the MACJC State Tournament.

Pearl River’s Mykeal Maes hit two home runs and teammate Baleigh Volking smacked a three run homer and drove in 5 as Pearl River shut out Gulf Coast 7-0 to drop the Lady Bulldogs to 33-13 on the season. The Lady Wildcats (30-18) went on to win the 2010 MACJC State Title by beating East Central 2-0.

“We can’t blame anyone but ourselves,” said Gulf Coast head coach Kenneth Long. “It’s very disappointing.”

Pearl River jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Maes hit a two run blast off Lady Bulldog starter Linsey Dickerson (16-6), who gave up seven runs on 10 hits and struck out five. In the top of the third Volking drove in another run with a double then her three run shot in the seventh followed by a solo Blast from Maes put the game out of reach for Gulf Coast.

The Lady Bulldogs uncharacteristically committed three errors and could manage six hits against Pearl River, two coming from Kayla Tompkins.

“We’ve just got to bounce back next week at the Region 23 Tournament,” Long added.

The Lady Bulldogs will defend their Region 23 Title May 6-8 in Clinton.
