MGCCC softball goes 1-1 on first day of NJCAA National Tourney

NORMAL, Ill.---Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College dropped their first game but bounced back to fight off elimination and get a win at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament Thursday.

In game one, a 10-5 loss to Blackhawk College, the Lady Bulldogs got solo homeruns from Lindsey Keyes (third this season) and Kayla Moran (first this season) and a three-run homer by Megan Colvin (fifth this season). However, Gulf Coast committed five errors in the contest, with pitcher Brittany Fields (13-4) absorbing the loss. Keyes, Holly Lawrence, and Kayla Tompkins each had two hits.

Gulf Coast (27-11) came back later and defeated Delaware Tech 3-1 with Tiffany Fuller (2-1) getting the win in the circle. Fuller gave up 12 hits while striking out three and walking two. Megan Colvin stayed red hot with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, while Lindsey Keyes, Kayla Moran, and Kayla Tompkins each had two hits to end the season for Delaware (30-12).

The Lady Bulldogs take on Johnson County (Kan.) (34-12) in another elimination game today at 10 a.m. If Gulf Coast survives, they’ll take on the Iowa Central/Macomb winner at Noon.
