MGCCC softball sweeps Pearl River

Pitcher Brandi Westerfield only gave up two hits against Pearl River in a 6-1 victory Apr. 6.

PERKINSTON-The scores read as a two-set win in tennis. However, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's 6-1, 6-2 doubleheader sweep of archrival Pearl River in fastpitch softball Monday helped the Lady Bulldogs keep pace in the race for the MACJC South Division crown.

Gulf Coast (16-6, 13-3) took game one 6-1 behind pitcher Brandi Westerfield's two-hit, complete game performance. The sophomore from Richland struck out five on the way to upping her record to 7-2. Holly Lawrence had two hits and 2 RBI'S to help her .478 team-leading batting average. Megan Colvin also had two hits, while Lindsey Keyes added 2 RBI'S.

The Lady Bulldogs won the nightcap 6-2 as pitcher Brittany Fields (8-2) struck out six and got the victory. Julie Mercer and Cassie Slaton each had two hits for Gulf Coast.

The Lady Bulldogs host East Central Wednesday while Pearl River (19-9, 8-4) travels to Summitt Tuesday.
