MGCCC gets soggy split at Southwest

Mississippi Gulf Coast spent more than five hours winning the opening game of a doubleheader at Southwest on Thursday but wound up with a split in Summit.

A two-hour rain delay prolonged the Bulldogs' 6-2 victory, and their bats waited too long to come to life in the second. Gulf Coast fell 4-3 and is now 18-14, 8-8 in the MACJC.

Southwest is also 18-14, but remains a game back at 7-9.

Brian Lane extended his hitting streak to nine games, driving in two runs with four hits in the opener.

Irby Dossett started and struck out seven in 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

In the nightcap, Southwest scored four times in the fifth. Gulf Coast stormed back in its final at bat, but fell a run short.

Tyler Rachel doubled, and Ian Goff scored him with a single. Justin Nussbaum doubled to score another run, and Lane doubled him home.
