PERKINSTON — No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast got a stellar pitching performance from Josh Lewis, and the big Bulldog bats continued to mash in a sweep of Nunez on Wednesday at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.

Josh Lewis (So, Theodore/Mobile Ala.) allowed only one unearned run and three hits in an 11-1 win in five innings of the first game. Gulf Coast (15-1) hit three home runs in that game and three more in a 13-3 win in five innings in the second.

"Josh threw really good," Gulf Coast coach Rodney Batts said. "He's done that for us all year. He's got good stuff. The changeup was what was his good pitch today. He could throw it at any time. He threw it in a lot of hitter's counts."

Dylan Menhennett (So, Biloxi/Biloxi) had a home run and two triples in the first game, and another home run and triple in the second game. Brandon Parker (Fr, West Harrison/Saucier) hit his nation-leading 11th home run in the opener.

Colby Cagle (So, West Harrison/Lizana), Dustan Dille (Fr, Brookwood/Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and Preston Stringer (Fr, Stone/Perkinston) also hit homers.

Parker and Ike Williams (Fr, St. Martin/Biloxi) had three hits in the doubleheader.

The Bulldogs trailed in both games. Nunez, a first-year program from Chalmette, La., scored an unearned run against Lewis in the first.

Gulf Coast tied it in the bottom of the inning, then jumped into the lead with five runs in the second. That allowed Lewis to begin cruising.

"I threw a lot of fastballs today," he said. "I got in the zone a lot. My breaking ball was OK, but my changeup worked well."

Nunez was up 3-0 after two in the second game, but Gulf Coast's three-home run third inning put them up 8-3.

"It shows how much heart this team has," said Menhennett, who now has eight round-trippers. We never get too down in the dugout. We're staying level-headed throughout the game."

The Bulldogs added five more in the fifth to end it.

Gulf Coast's weekend schedule is changing. They will now play a doubleheader against Delgado which, for now, is scheduled for noon. The time may move up to try to beat the weather.
