No. 16 MGCCC loses 2 in MACJC opener

No. 16 Mississippi Gulf Coast opened its MACJC schedule Saturday at Fulton, where No. 8 Itawamba won twice.

The Bulldogs (16-4) put together late rallies in both games to make things interesting but lost 7-4 and 11-9 despite home runs by Cullan O'Shea (Fr, Mary G. Montgomery/Mobile, Ala.) in both games.

Gulf Coast fell behind 7-0 in the opener but got a solo homer from Brandon Parker (Fr, West Harrison/Saucier) on the first pitch of the seventh, and O'Shea smacked a three-run shot with two outs.

Parker leads the country with 12 home runs.

The Bulldogs got runners on in the eighth and ninth innings, but nothing else across.

O'Shea had two hits, and Ty Barnes (So, Petal/Petal) took the loss to fall to 3-2.

Parker had an RBI double and Chase Fagan (R-So, Hancock/Poplarville) had an RBI single with two outs in the first inning of the second game.

Itawamba (16-2) scored three times in the second and four more in the third before Colby Cagle (So, West Harrison/Lizana) had an RBI double and Fisher Ray (Fr, George County/Bruce) drove in another with a groundout to make it 7-4.

The Indians added four more in their half of the fourth, but Dylan Menhennett (So, Biloxi/Biloxi) had a bases-loaded walk and Alden Davis (Fr, Pascagoula/Pascagoula) added an RBI single to make it 11-7. The Bulldogs still had the bases loaded with one out but got nothing else across.

O'Shea homered to lead off the seventh, and Ray's double made it 11-9. The next three batters represented tying runs but nobody could deliver the big hit.

Cagle had three RBI, and Fagan and Ray had two hits each.

Gulf Coast returns to action Wednesday when Copiah-Lincoln visits Perkinston. First pitch at Ken "Curly" Farris Field is at 3 p.m.
