PERKINSTON — The Mississippi Gulf Coast men's basketball team will start its postseason on Tuesday at the 2019 MACJC Basketball Championship in Ellisville.
The Bulldogs (19-4, 11-3 South) finished third in the division to qualify for their 21st straight trip to the state tournament. It's by far the longest in the state, well ahead of the next longest streak, Northeast's five consecutive seasons.
The Tigers, coincidentally, will be the first round opponents in the final game of the day scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Northeast finished 18-4 overall and 8-4 in the North to earn the second-seed up there.
"I know they've been very good all year," Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weather said. "They've lost four games, all in conference. They're very sound with a good head coach. They're a good team."
The game will be streamed at https://www.nemcctv.com/black-channel.
The Gulf Coast-Northeast winner will play the winner of the Jones-Delta contest on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Bobcats (18-5, 12-2 South) earned the No. 1 seed after being division co-champions with Pearl River. Delta (10-13, 5-7 North) is a fourth-seed.
The championship game is Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
"Our thing is we've got to go play with a lot of energy," Weathers said. "Our defense has to be rock solid. We've got to rebound the ball better than we've been doing."
