Spivery signs with Lander

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast point guard LaRaymond Spivery has signed to continue his collegiate career with NCAA Division II Lander University.

"When I got there, it felt like home," he said. "They talked with me about academics, so that stood out a lot. It made me feel like I was at home."

Spivery, who played for George County High School, earned All-NJCAA Region 23 honors as a sophomore and was a two-time All-MACJC honoree. He averaged 12.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.4 steals while starting 46 games over his two seasons.

The Bulldogs went 36-17 in those two seasons, including the school's first 20-win season since 2012 as a sophomore.

"He's just a terrific competitor," retired Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers said. "He's got a high IQ for the game. I don't think it hurt him being our point guard that he was a really, really good high school quarterback. He brought that kind of leadership, that kind of toughness to our team. He was very coachable, a real extension of the coaching on the bench to the floor."

Lander plays in the Peach Belt Conference. The Bearcats are coached by Drew Richards, who is in his first season in Greenwood, S.C., after helping build a D-II power at UNC Pembroke.

Spivery will take important lessons with him to the Peach Belt.

"Coach Weathers always told me to go hard and stay in the books," he said. "He wanted me to be a leader."
