PERKINSTON — Top-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast plays in the first MACJC golf tournament of the year starting Saturday, and the goal is simple.
"We hope to make a statement," coach Tommy Snell said. "All the teams will be there. We hope we can go up there and play well."
The Bulldogs are the preseason No. 1 in the Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division II Coaches Poll. The team finished second at the national championship last season.
They're coming off a third-place finish in the Wallace State Fall Invitational, where they finished 26 shots ahead of the only other conference tournament in the field.
"We haven't seen anybody but Meridian, and they didn't play well at Cullman. But they're like we are, they work hard and always get better."
Snell is taking all 10 players to the event in Raymond, trying to get all the freshmen tournament experience. The Eagle Ridge Golf Club is Hinds' home course, and all six MACJC schools will be there.
"It's tricky," Snell said. "It can be easy, but there are two or three holes on the back nine that you have to really be careful with how you play them, how you attack them."
Snell and the team will play a practice round Friday. The two-day, 36-hole tournament concludes Sunday.
