PERKINSTON — No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast will be facing a real test at its own golf tournament this week.
There will be 17 teams in the MGCCC Fall Invitational, including NAIA and NJCAA Division I teams. The two-day, 36-hole tournament starts Monday at Grand Bear Golf Course in Saucier.
"We've got all these D-I junior colleges coming it, and we've got some really good NAIA teams coming in," Bulldogs coach Tommy Snell said. "The competition will be fun."
There will be a tournament within a tournament for the five MACJC teams, which include Copiah-Lincoln, Hinds, Itawamba and East Central. Those schools compete NJCAA Division II, as does Rend Lake, from Illinois.
Division I community colleges include Marion Military, Central Alabama, Jefferson State, Wallace State, Rend Lake (Ill.), Andrew, Bishop State, Calhoun, Coastal Alabama and Georgia Military.
Gulf Coast won the event two years ago. Snell has only one goal for his squad this time around.
"We've won it once," he said. "We've had it since 2002, and two years ago was the first time we won it. This team is good enough to win. We expect to win, but it's such a great field."
