No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast didn't play particularly well over 36 holes Monday at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament Preview in Foley, Ala.

It's a testament to their team strength that in a field with five of the top 11 teams in the country in the field, the Bulldogs still have a chance to win at GlenLakes Golf Club

"It shows you how good we are," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "To play as poorly as we did, we're still second."

His team is 12 shots behind No. 5 Meridian, which leads the field at 6-over. MGCCC's Brice Wilkinson (Fr. Madison Central/Madison) is also in second at even-par 144, five shots behind Meridian's Isaiah Jackson.

No. 8 Parkwood is in third at 26-over, with Walters State, tied for 10th in the Bushnell GolfWeek Coaches Poll, 15 more shots back in fourth.

Co-No. 10 Copiah-Lincoln is seventh at 56-over.

Wilkinson played his last four holes in his first round birdie-bogey-birdie-birdie to get back to even-par. His second 18 featured two birdies and two bogeys.

"Brice was a bright spot," Snell said. "Playing in the fourth spot, he shot even par. That's pretty good. We just need more consistent scores."

Jackson Wedgeworth (So., West Jones/Soso) rebounded from a first-round 77 to post 2-under and get into a fourth-place tie. Colby Blake (So., Parklane/Tylertown) is tied for 11th.

"We didn't play too well," Snell said. "We had to count a 78 both rounds. It just wasn't our normal game."

The event is an opportunity for teams to play the course that will host the 2018 NJCAA Division II National Championship in May under tournament conditions. The event will conclude Tuesday with 18 holes.

Counting Sunday's practice round, the teams will have played 72 holes. That's what they'll play to decide the national title.

"We're not out of it," Snell said. "We can come back and put a good round together. We've done it before. It's just going to take a team effort."
