Wilkinson leads No. 2 MGCCC into 2nd

Mississippi Gulf Coast's Brice Wilkinson leads the field after the first round of the Coastal Alabama Invitational, and the No. 2-ranked Bulldogs are two shots off the lead in Mobile, Ala.

Wilkinson (Fr. Madison Central/Madison) shot a 2-under 70 to lead by a shot. Gulf Coast's Jackson Wedgeworth (So., West Jones/Soso) shot 1-over and is tied for fifth.

"We've got a good shot at it," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We've got a good team. If we put four scores together, we can certainly test Eastern Florida. There are some really good teams in this tournament. If we play our game, we have just a good a shot as anybody."

The Bulldogs are two shots behind Eastern Florida State, which is ranked fifth in NJCAA Division I and shot 5-over. Central Alabama is in third at 12-over. Wallace State, ranked seventh in D-II, is fourth at plus-15.

Two other MACJC teams are competing at Rock Creek Golf Club. East Central is ninth at 32-over, and Copiah-Lincoln is tied for 10th five more shots back.

"We played well. Jackson had one hiccup on No. 13," Snell said. "We played really well. Brice played really solid all day."

Colby Blake (So., Parklane/Tylertown) and Colby Entriken (So., Hancock/Pass Christian) gutted out tough starts and helped the team out.

"Colby Blake really brought it back," Snell said. "He was 6-over after eight holes and shot 2-over. I'm really proud of the way he shot."

Entriken was 5-over at the turn but played a much stronger back nine.

"I'm proud of them for fighting and grinding it out," said Snell.

The tournament finishes Sunday with 18 holes.
