No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast made up two shots on first-round leader Eastern Florida State, but lost a one-hole playoff in the Coastal Alabama Invitational in Mobile.
"To tie a team like Eastern Florida is pretty dadgum good," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "They're a top-ranked D-I team. To beat all those other teams was a great showing for us, but it's always a bitter pill to swallow when you lose in a playoff."
EFSU, which is ranked fifth in NJCAA Division I, got birdie in the playoff from medalist Fraser Davren to help it win the title. Davren shot 1-under to win the tournament at Rock Creek Golf Club.
Brice Wilkinson (Fr. Madison Central/Madison), Jackson Wedgeworth (So., West Jones/Soso) and Colby Entriken (So., Hancock/Pass Christian) all finished tied for sixth at 3-over. They did it through different paths.
Wilkinson led the field after the first day but shot 5-over on the second, while Wedgeworth was a consistent plus-1, plus-2. Entriken shot 78 in the first round but helped led the Bulldogs' second-day charge with a 69. It was the only sub-70 round of the weekend.
"It was a good day overall," Snell said. "Nobody other than Entriken had their best stuff today, but they fought through it."
Two other MACJC teams competed in the event. East Central finished ninth at plus-61, and Copiah-Lincoln tied for 10th at +72.
Gulf Coast returns to action March 5 when the Bulldogs play in the fourth MACJC event of the year. The teams will play at Northwood Country Club in Meridian.
