FOLEY, Ala. — Mississippi Gulf Coast's second round at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship looked a lot better in the rear-view mirror than when the Bulldogs were on the course.
"Seeing how all the other teams played down the stretch, we weren't as bad as it felt," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "Meridian's got a really good team and we're nine shots back, but we feel better about things now."
The Bulldogs are tied for second at 12-over, nine shots behind Meridian. Parkland is also at 12-over, with South Mountain and Tyler another shot back tied for fourth. Kirkwood is at 18-over in sixth.
"Brice shot 2-over with a double- and a triple-bogey," Snell said. "Jackson missed some chances to score and still shot 1-over"
Colby Entriken (So., Hancock/Pass Christian) is tied for 20th at 4-over, and Colby Blake (So., Parklane/Tylertown) is two more shots back tied for 30th. Carter Nicholson (Fr., Pearl River Central/Carriere) is at 8-over.
The golfers had to sit through a one-hour lightning delay around lunchtime after a fairly significant rain storm moved through.
There are 21 teams competing for the championship, with another 29 golfers from 22 schools playing for the individual title.
The 72-hole event continues Wednesday with the third round, and Gulf Coast tees off at 12:24. The final round is Thursday.
