No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast is in third after the first round of the Central Alabama Invitational in Alexander City, Ala.

"We just never got it going. Our chipping and putting wasn't up to speed," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "These greens are humongous up here. We don't play any humongous greens all year long, so our chipping wasn't the best."

The Bulldogs, who play in NJCAA Division II, shot 5-over 293 and are 12 shots behind the host team and six behind Calhoun. Central Alabama is ranked sixth in the Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division I Coaches Poll, and Gulf Coast is four shots ahead of Eastern Florida State, which is third in that ranking.

MGCCC is the only Division II team in the tournament.

Gulf Coast's Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) and Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) are tied for seventh at even-par, five back of CACC's Jake Poole. Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere) is tied for 12th at 1-over.

"We just didn't make very many putts today," Snell said. "CACC will be hard to catch tomorrow on their home track. They've got a really good team. We'll have to put a really phenomenal round together tomorrow. They'll probably shoot under par against tomorrow, so we'll have to put together a really low round."

The final round of the two-day event will be played Tuesday at the Willow Point Golf and Country Club. This is the last event of the fall semester for the MGCCC golf team.
