No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast needed two extra holes to do it, but the Bulldogs golf team won its first event of the spring Sunday, erasing a five-shot deficit to beat Wallace State at the Coastal Alabama Invitational.
"It was intense," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We both had to count a bogey on the first playoff hole, but we made four pars on the second to win."
Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus) made a clutch birdie putt on his final hole to force the playoff.
"It was about a 20- to 25-foot, right-to-left putt," he said. "The whole day, I'd been struggling to get those in the hole but I was pretty close. For that one to drop was pretty special."
Crosson shot 2-over 74 to move up a spot in the individual standings and trying for second. Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) fired 1-under to tie for fifth and join him on the All-Tournament Team.
Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) tied for Sunday's low round with a 70 to jump up six spots to ninth. Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere) finished tied for 19th, and Cameron Mobley (Fr., Northwest Rankin/Brandon) tied for 29th.
Gulf Coast and Wallace State finished five shots ahead of Calhoun, and 13 ahead of Eastern Florida, which is ranked third in the Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division I Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs are second in the Division II version of the poll.
Central Alabama, which is ranked eighth in Division I, finished fifth.
"After being down five shots the first day, it felt good for us as a team to come back and the whole team play well," Crosson said. "I'm glad I could make that putt and help us get into the playoff."
