No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast survived some adverse weather and leads by one shot after the first round of the Carey Collegiate Classic in Hattiesburg.
The Bulldogs, who are the only community college team in the field, shot 1-under at Canebrake Country Club, just ahead of Loyola-New Orleans. Dalton State, which is ranked fifth in the Bushnell Golfweek NAIA Coaches Poll, is two more shots back.
"We played well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "At the turn, we were 6-under. Then the weather really turned crummy about hole No. 15. The wind came up, it got really cold. It was for everybody, but we really got lucky. We got to play some holes in decent weather."
Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) led the Gulf Coast charge by firing a 4-under 68. He's tied with Dalton State's Ben Rebne and Loyola's Ryan Hicks.
Hopkins had seven birdies and was at 6-under through 13 before the weather set in.
Gulf Coast's Nathan Woolard (Fr., Poplar Bluff/Poplar Bluff, Mo.) is along in fourth at 1-under, with teammate Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison), Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere) and Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus) tied for ninth at 1-over.
The Bulldogs played holes 15-19 at 11-over.
Host William Carey is ranked 10th in the Bushnell Golfweek Poll, and the Crusaders have squads in fifth and seventh place after 18 holes.
The second round will be played Tuesday.
