No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast tees off in the first MACJC tournament of 2019 on Monday at Briarwood Country Club in Meridian.
The defending national champions will be playing in the event hosted by the team that finished as runners-up at last year's NJCAA Tournament in Foley, Ala. Meridian is ranked two spots behind the Bulldogs in the latest Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division II Coaches Poll.
They are the only two MACJC teams in the top 10, but Copiah-Lincoln and Itawamba are receiving votes in the poll. Hinds will also be playing at Briarwood.
Gulf Coast has won its last two tournaments and swept all three conference tournaments in the fall.
Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) is coming off medalist honors against a field of four-year golfers at the Carey Collegiate Classic. He's won three of his last five outings, including the last two MACJC tournaments.
Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) tied Hopkins at the event hosted by Itawamba, and he's been on the All-Tournament team of five of seven events and finished top-10 six times.
