No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast is halfway to its fourth MACJC victory of year after the first round at Briarwood Golf Club in Meridian, thanks in part to a stellar back nine from Brice Wilkinson.
The Bulldogs lead No. 4 Meridian by seven shots after shooting 1-over. Copiah-Lincoln is another shot back in third place.
Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) made four birdies on the last seven holes to surge into a first-place tie with Meridian's Mitchell Fifer.
Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus) shot even-par 72 and is in fourth place, one shot ahead of teammate Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England), who is tied for fifth.
Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere) and Patrick Powers (Fr., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport) shot 4-over to tie for eighth. Cameron Mobley (Fr., Northwest Rankin/Brandon) is another shot back tied for 14th.
The Bulldogs will try to make it four-for-four in MACJC events this year Tuesday.
