No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast has five golfers tied for first place individually and the team smoke the field in the first round of the fifth MACJC regular-season event of the year in Wesson.
The Bulldogs shot even-par 288 to finished the first 18 holes 16 shots up on host Copiah-Lincoln at Wolf Hollow Golf Course. The final round will be played Sunday.
"We felt like we weren't playing well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "Everybody was around even, but looking at the scores, I guess we played pretty well."
Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison), Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England), Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus), Miles Jackson (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) and Nathan Woolard (Fr., Poplar Bluff/Poplar Bluff, Mo.) shot 72. They are joined by Co-Lin's Logan Pitts and Meridian's Mitchell Fifer at even-par atop the leaderboard.
Woolard is playing as an individual in the event. Gulf Coast's fifth player, Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere), shot 2-over and is tied for ninth.
So dominant were the Bulldogs, if you took their four highest scores, that team would have finished second by two shots.
Wilkinson, Hopkins, Nicholson and Jackson all birdied 16 and combined to play the tough final two holes 2-over.
"It was just a matter of being patient, taking our time, and waiting for something good to happen," Snell said. "Something good happened late, and we finished it up."
