No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast has a five-shot lead after Saturday's first round of the NJCAA District D Championship in Amory, with all five of their squad in the top nine of the individual leaderboard.
"It was a good day all in all," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. It was very windy It was tough choosing the right club. It was tough on the greens, but my guys held tough. It'll be a good battle tomorrow."
Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) is two shots behind Itawamba's Dean Garrett, who shot 2-under 70 at Ackia Golf Club.
Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus) is a shot back in third, and Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere) is in a tie for fourth at 2-over. Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) and Miles Jackson (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) are part of a four-way tie for sixth at 3-over.
Patrick Powers (Fr., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport) is at 2-over, but he's playing as an individual and isn't eligible for awards.
The Bulldogs had three holes of double-bogey or worse, including a double and a triple on 18.
"We just kind of faltered a little bit on the back nine, but we got off to a good start so that helped."
The Bulldogs are 15 shots ahead of third-place Meridian. Only two teams advance to the NJCAA Championship next month in Plymouth, Ind. The top five individuals whose teams don't qualify will also make the trip.
The second round will be played Sunday.
