PERKINSTON — No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast has three players named to the semifinalist list for the prestigious NJCAA Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award presented by Barbasol.
Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus), Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) and Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) are among the 30 players named.
The trio will be part of the Bulldogs team trying to defend the school's title at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship in Plymouth, Ind., later this month.
Crosson finished second at the NJCAA District D Championship last month after shooting 3-under. He made three other All-Tournament teams during his first collegiate season.
Hopkins finished tied for third at the MACJC Championship and tied for fourth at the district tournament. He was medalist or co-medalist at three tournaments and made seven All-Tournament teams.
Wilkinson won medalist at the district championship for the second straight season and also won the MACJC championship. He claimed the Hubert Tucker Award for having the lowest scoring average in conference tournaments. Wilkinson won or tied for the lead in five tournaments and made five other All-Tournament teams.
Nicklaus Award recipients will be announced May 30 with the honor presented by Jack Nicklaus at a ceremony during the final round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide at Muirfield Village Golf Club. In addition to receiving the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award, the five recipients will compete in the Barbasol Shootout for an exemption into the PGA TOUR's Barbasol Championship, held July 18-21, at the Champions at Keene Trace in Lexington, Ky. The Barbasol Shootout will be held Saturday, June 1 at The Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio – the same club where Jack Nicklaus played collegiate golf for the Buckeyes.
