PLYMOUTH, Ind. — Mississippi Gulf Coast has its work cut out if it wants to defend its national title, trailing after two rounds by 27 shots at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship.
The Bulldogs are in fifth place after Wednesday, with Walters State leading the field at 12-over. South Mountain is in second six shots back, with Gulf Coast eight shots back of third place.
"We're going to have to play like we had some during the year, when everybody plays well and we just shoot under par," coach Tommy Snell said. "It's going to take a couple of under-par rounds to catch those teams. They're good teams."
Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) shot 2-over and is three behind 36-hole leader Alex Hodge of Walters State, who is 1-under for the tournament.
"We're not clicking on all cylinders, but golf is a funny game," Snell said. "You can be playing terribly, and then all of the sudden something clicks. I thought when Jon eagled 15, I thought that was going to kickstart us. Brice knocked it on in two and birdied. Miles birdied it. We just have to play like we know how to play."
