Lady Bulldogs sweep JDCC

HURLEY – No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast crushed Jefferson Davis Community College in a doubleheader sweep Tuesday at East Central High School.


The Lady Bulldogs (6-0) won the opener 11-3 and closed it out with a 12-4 victory in Game 2. Precious Sanders (Fr, Philadelphia/Philadelphia), Molly Murphy (So, Southaven/Lewisburg) and Izzy Werdann (So, Pensacola, Fla./Tate) hit home runs for Gulf Coast.


Jefferson Davis is 0-8.


Brittney Triplett (Fr, Brandon/Brandon) went 3-for-4 in the first game with two RBI. Sanders had a grand slam.


Lexie Mathis (So, Mobile, Ala./Baker) had two doubles, and Kristen Sexton (Fr, Gulfport/West Harrison) and Paige Dill went 2-for-2. Abbey Salvo drove in two runs with a double.


Nora Keehn (So, Thibodaux, La./Vandebilt Catholic) picked up her third win of the season by allowing three hits. She struck out four and didn't walk anyone.


In the second game, Murphy and Werdann homered in the fourth inning. Mathis went 2-for-2 and is batting a team-leading .643 and getting on base more than 78 percent of the time.


Aidan Nichols (Fr, Brandon/Brandon) had two triples and also improved to 3-0 in the circle. She struck out four and walked one, allowing six hits.


Gulf Coast returns to action Tuesday when Faulkner State visits Biloxi High School. The doubleheader starts at 4 p.m.
