PERKINSTON — No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast got its nose bloodied in a trip to No. 1 LSU-Eunice, but the Lady Bulldogs hope the quickly scheduled trip turns out to be a good thing.
The defending national champions pounced on a five Lady Bulldogs errors in the opener, winning 12-4 in five innings. Gulf Coast (6-2) rallied from four down in the second game, but gave up a pair of late runs to lose 7-5.
"I think it was a good things for us to do," Lady Bulldogs coach Kenneth Long said. "You can sit here and play weaker teams and you don't get exposed on certain things. We've learned a lot of things we can improve on."
LSU-Eunice improved to 20-2.
In Game 2, Gulf Coast trailed 5-1 after four innings before they bunched some hits together with two outs. Precious Sanders (Fr., Philadelphia/Philadelphia) doubled to drive in Lanae Davis (Fr., Hurley/East Central), who had singled. Molly Murphy (So., Southaven/Lewisburg) singled in another run, and Kristen Sexton (Fr., Gulfport/West Harrison) tied it up with a two-run double.
LSU-E got a home run and another run on an error in the sixth, and Gulf Coast's rally in the seventh left Sanders on third with the meat of the order coming up.
Gulf Coast's Izzy Werdann (So., Pensacola, Fla./Tate) smacked a three-run homer in the second inning of Game 1 to give the Lady Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. But MGCCC gave up eight runs in the third inning of Game 1.
"We made a lot of errors, which is kind of out of character," Long said. "I think we made five errors in a row. They were hitting the ball hard, but we weren't on our A game. I thought the second game we did much better."
Gulf Coast had added the trip to Louisiana quickly this week when another doubleheader had been rained out. The Lady Bulldogs will play LSU-E again Friday, the middle of three games that day in the Rush Invitational in Meridian. They play another two games Saturday, with Long needing three wins to get to 500 victories for his career.
