No. 5 MGCCC swamps No. 19 Heartland

MERIDIAN – No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast exploded for a dozen first-inning runs and blew past No. 19 Heartland 19-1 in five innings.

After an opening-game loss in the Rush Invitational had the Lady Bulldogs riding a three-game losing streak, they blew through the rest of the field. They have a four-game win streak percolating now, and allowed only two runs in 31 innings in Meridian.

Precious Sanders (Fr, Philadelphia/Philadelphia) went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Kristen Sexton (Fr, Gulfport/West Harrison) went 2-for-2 with two doubles, and her replacement, Tori Gum (Fr, Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs), also went 2-for-2.

Sexton went 9-for-15 with three doubles and four RBI in the tournament. Lexie Mathis (So, Mobile, Ala./Baker) and Aidan Nichols (Fr, Brandon/Brandon) had six RBI in the five games.

The Lady Bulldogs (10-3) also benefited from nine walks and three Heartland errors.

Nora Keehn (So, Thibodaux, La./Vandebilt Catholic) struck out five and walked one, allowing four hits. She improves to 5-1.

Gulf Coast returns to action Friday when it travels to Niceville, Fla. for a four-game tournament. The Lady Bulldogs play twice on Friday and Saturday.
