MGCCC drops two at Niceville

No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped a pair of softball games to NJCAA Division I teams Friday at the Northwest Florida State Tournament in Niceville, Fla.


The Lady Bulldogs (10-5) lost the opener to Gulf Coast State 5-1, and fell to host Northwest Florida State 3-1 in the nightcap. Northwest Florida (24-5) is ranked sixth in the NJCAA Division I poll. Gulf Coast State is now 14-7.


In the opener, Aidan Nichols (Fr, Brandon/Brandon) took the loss on the mound with 2.2 innings pitched to fall to 5-3. Molly Murphy (So, Southaven/Lewisburg) went 3-for-3 with a double and scored the Lady Bulldogs' only run.


Izzy Werdann (So, Pensacola, Fla./Tate) had a solo home run for the only MGCCC run in the second game. Nichols and Brittney Triplett (Fr, Brandon/Brandon) had two hits each.


Nora Keehn (So, Thibodaux, La./Vandebilt Catholic) took the loss despite giving up only four hits in six innings. She struck out eight and walked two.


MGCCC plays Chipola, another Division I team, Saturday at 11 a.m. The Lady Bulldogs close out their Niceville activity when they play Lansing right after.
