No. 5 MGCCC sweeps at Meridian

No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast got four RBI from Izzy Werdann in the first game and a home run by Lexie Mathis in the second of a doubleheader sweep at Meridian.


Kristen Sexton (Fr, Gulfport/West Harrison) went 5-for-5 in the two games for the Lady Bulldogs (25-8, 12-2 MACJC). Gulf Coast remains in second place in the conference after winning 11-3 in five innings and 7-4.


Werdann (So, Pensacola, Fla./Tate) had an RBI single in the first inning of Game 1, a two-run double in the third and an RBI groundout in the fourth. Sexton has three hits in the opener, driving in two runs.


Brittney Triplett (Fr, Brandon/Brandon) had two hits, and Aidan Nichols (Fr, Brandon/Brandon) had a double.


Nora Keehn (So, Thibodaux, La./Vandebilt Catholic) scattered five hits to improve to 12-4.


Mathis (So, Mobile, Ala./Baker) clubbed her fourth home run of the season in the fourth to give Gulf Coast a 7-0 lead. She extended her hitting streak to 13 games.


Sexton, Abbey Salvo (Fr, Brandon/Brandon) and Camry Griffith (So, Taylorsville/Taylorsville) had two hits.


Salvo, Triplett and Nichols had triples. Sexton and Precious Sanders (Fr, Philadelphia/Philadelphia) had doubles.


Nichols struck out five and allowed eight hits and is now 13-4.


Gulf Coast returns to action Wednesday with another road game at Northwest. The doubleheader starts at noon.
