The No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast softball team split with Northwest in Senatobia on Saturday, winning the opener 9-2 but falling 5-4 in the second.
The Lady Bulldogs (28-9, 17-3 MACJC) remain in second place in the conference standings. They slugged four home runs against the Rangers.
Molly Murphy (So, Southaven/Lewisburg), Izzy Werdann (So, Pensacola, Fla./Tate) and Lexie Mathis (So, Mobile, Ala./Baker) homered in the first game. Mathis had three hits and two RBI, with Werdann getting two hits and two RBI.
Nora Keehn (So, Thibodaux, La./Vandebilt Catholic) struck out six and allowed five hits to pick up the win.
In the second game, Gulf Coast had 12 hits but managed only four runs. Werdann homered again and had three more hits. She drove in two runs.
Salvo, Sexton, Murphy and Precious Sanders had two hits each. Sanders had a triple.
Keehn came in relief in Game 2 and took the loss. She's 15-5 on the season.
Gulf Coast returns to action Tuesday when it hosts East Central at East Central High School. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
