PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast catcher Izzy Werdann has been named to the NJCAA All-American Third Team, as selected by the Division II Softball Committee.
Werdann, a sophomore from Pensacola, Fla., led Gulf Coast with 13 home runs, 47 RBI and a .513 on-base percentage. She batted .384.
"I'm kinda shocked," Werdann said. "It means a lot. It's such an honor because I know I had a good season, but there are so many other girls that deserved it. It's a complete honor."
Werdann won MACJC Co-Player of the Year honors and was on the All-Region 23 and All-MACJC teams.
Gulf Coast finished as MACJC regular-season and tournament runners-up, missing making the NJCAA Tournament by one game in a regional that saw the two teams advance eventually play for the national title. The Lady Bulldogs (39-12) were ranked seventh in the final regular-season poll, thanks in large part to her efforts.
"Going into the season, we were hoping she wouldn't have to catch every game, but she pretty much caught every game," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "That's just a tribute to her to play that many innings behind the plate and have the kind of year she had. She really had a phenomenal year for us."
For Werdann, there was no place she would have rather been.
"Catching the whole year got tiring, but that's exactly what I wanted," she said. "It's funny. They wanted me to be able to play third and catch, but to me catching is always been what I wanted to do. That was exactly where I wanted to be."
