Lady Bulldogs open 2018 with split

Mississippi Gulf Coast got its 2018 season off to a winning start Friday, beating Baton Rouge 6-2 in the opener at the Pearl River Tournament in Poplarville. No. 1 LSU-Eunice edged the Lady Bulldogs in the second game, 4-3.

Gulf Coast got on the board in the first when Katie Beth Williams (Fr, Smithville/Smithville) got plunked with the bases loaded and Madison Wall (Fr, East Central/Hurley) hit a sacrifice fly.

Avery Sanders (Fr, E.D. White/Thibodaux, La.) hit a solo home run in the third, and Wall drove in two more with a single in the sixth. The Lady Bulldogs added another run in that frame on a wild pitch.

Savannah Bryant (Fr, Long Beach/Long Beach) allowed only one hit, a two-out, two-run home run in the seventh on the way to her first win. She struck out eight and didn't walk anybody.

The Lady Bulldogs fell behind LSU-E 2-0 in the top of the first but clawed back even when a ground ball by Megan Sexton (Fr, West Harrison/Gulfport) forced a two-out error to allow a run to score. Mya Hopson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) followed with an RBI single to tie it.

Two-time defending national champs LSU-E added one in the third and one in the fifth.

Gulf Coast got a two-out single by Jada White (Fr, Philadelphia/Philadelphia) to deliver the final run of the game.

Brittney Triplett (So, Brandon/Brandon) had two hits for MGCCC. Sydney Davis (Fr, Tri-County Academy/Clinton) took the loss in her first appearance.

Gulf Coast returns to action Tuesday against Baton Rouge. The doubleheader, which starts at 2 p.m., will be played at West Harrison High School.
