MGCCC drops two in Meridian

No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast lost a pair of games on the first day of the Rush Invitational in Meridian on Friday.

Wallace State-Hanceville defeated the Lady Bulldogs 5-1 in the first game, and Calhoun won 2-1 in the second.

Gulf Coast (5-3) will try to play a pair of games tomorrow against Wallace State-Dothan at 3 p.m. and Bevill State at 5 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs' second game Friday started in a heavy rain.

In the opener, Gulf Coast made three errors and dug a hole too big to climb out of. Mya Hopson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) had a home run and double.

Starter Savannah Bryant (Fr, Long Beach/Long Beach) gave up two runs in three innings to take the loss.

Calhoun scored its two runs during the downpour in the first inning. One of the runs against Sydney Davis (Fr, Tri-County Academy/Clinton) was unearned, and she went the distance allowing only five hits to take the tough-luck loss.

Gulf Coast nearly rallied in their final at-bat. Jada White (Fr, Philadelphia/Philadelphia) and Katie Beth Williams (Fr, Smithville/Smithville) singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh.

Hannah Hembree (Fr, Pascagoula/Pascagoula) drove in a run with an RBI groundout, and Williams advanced to third on the play. Gulf Coast couldn't get her home, though.

Gulf Coast's first scheduled game Friday against Northwest Florida State was not played because of dangerous field conditions.
