PERKINSTON — No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast's dominant doubleheader sweep against Coahoma at Ross-Smith Field on Friday put an exclamation mark on the regular season.
The Lady Bulldogs (30-12, 22-6 MACJC) won 10-0 and 16-0, both in five innings, to lock up third place in the final conference standings. The state tournament will begin Wednesday at Jones. Their opponent will be either Copiah-Lincoln or Southwest.
"I think we're playing about where we need to be to make the step into the state playoffs," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "Whoever wins state, is going to have to play really well."
Camryn Williams (So., White Hall/White Hall, Ark.) had a solo home run and a double in the first game and a grand slam in the second. She was 4-for-5 with six RBI in the doubleheader.
Bailey Massey (So., Bruce/Bruce), Briana Shores (Fr., Richland/Richland) and Lauren Hall (So., Nettleton/Nettleton) had two hits each in the first game. Bailey Massey (So., Bruce/Bruce) had a triple, and Kayla Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) had a double.
Shelby Archer (Fr., Pearl River Central/Picayune) and Talena Satcher (Fr., Enterprise/Enterprise) had two hits in the second game. Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier), Hannah Hembree (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) and Marsha' Hunt (Fr., Philadelphia/Philadelphia) had doubles, and Archer had a triple.
"The bats were good today," Long said. "I like our pitching depth. Our attitude heading into the tournament is going to help us. I'm looking forward to it."
