PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast battled No. 16 Jones to the final whistle Tuesday, but a late penalty kick was the difference in a 1-0 loss at Bary Thrash Field.
The Lady Bulldogs (5-6-1, 4-2-1 MACJC South) remain in second place in the division despite the loss. They are tied with Pearl River, but won the season series against their archrivals 1-0-1.
Jones (9-2, 6-0) clinched the South title and will host the MACJC Tournament next week in Ellisville. The Lady Bobcats' Aimee Durn converted the penalty in the 87th minute.
Gulf Coast needs a win at winless Southwest on Monday to clinch the second seed in the division and a home quarterfinal game against the North Division No. 3 seed. Northwest (4-8-1, 2-4 North) has the spot as of Tuesday night but still has games against Hinds and Holmes left to play.
The MACJC quarterfinals will be played Oct. 18. Start time will be determined after the matchup is finalized.
