MGCCC baseball opens 2013 with doubleheader split

BREWTON, AL---Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College fell two runs short of a doubleheader sweep at Jeff Davis C.C. Saturday as the 2013 season opened for the Bulldogs.
Gulf Coast (1-1) dropped game one 6-5 then came back to shut out the home team 9-0 in the nightcap.
Michael Gilbert and Chris Burdette each had two hits to lead the Gulf Coast offense in game one. Chris Wease started the game and went two innings on the mound while Jason McDonald (0-1) suffered the loss despite only giving up one earned run as the Bulldogs also committed three errors. Gilbert got on base in the top of the seventh but couldn't advance to tie the game.
The Bulldogs used two three run innings in the nightcap and stellar pitching from starter Stuart Holmes (1-0), Taylor Olsen, and Jordan Mata. Holmes struck out five and gave up no runs on three hits in five innings.
Gilbert, who had three hits and two RBI, again paced Gulf Coast while Burdette had another two-hit outing along with Kyle Clement. Blake Lawson provided the big blow with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth.
