PERKINSTON---The 2013 home opening doubleheader was a success as Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College swept Bishop State 10-4 & 4-2 Sunday at Curly Farris Field.

In game one, Zach Haarala’s two-run single highlighted a six run sixth inning that broke open a 4-4 tie. Haarala had two hits in the win while Tyler Quave also drove in two. Freshman pitcher Taylor Olsen started the game and struck out four while Stuart Holmes and Ryne Long (2-0) combined to hold the Wildcats at bay down the stretch.

The 4-2 nightcap featured a two-run homer by Chris Burdette in the second and a two-run triple by Quave in the third. Chris Wease got the victory on the mound, going five innings with seven strikeouts. Jason McDonald also tossed two innings of solid relief for the Bulldogs (5-1).

Gulf Coast travels to Faulkner State for a doubleheader Tuesday with game times at 1 & 3 p.m.
