2013-02-26

MGCCC’S Aliesha Barlow picked up 2 wins against Co-Lin Feb. 23.

MGCCC’S Grant Bell (left) and Travis Burdick got a doubles victory vs. Co-Lin Feb. 23.
In number one singles Alex Puyol defeated Emileo Covado 6-0, 6-0, while Robinson handled Corban May 6-1, 6-0. In number three singles Lachlan Puyol rolled past Troy Allrad 6-1, 6-0.
In number one doubles Robinson/A. Puyol got an 8-0 shut out win as did Georgian/L. Puyol and Travis Burdick/Grant Bell.
“Our men’s team played lights out,” said Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois. “They’re improving each match, but the success of our season will come down to the play of numbers four, five and six singles and number three doubles. I really like their attitude and work ethic.”
The Lady Bulldogs (2-1) dropped the match to Co-Lin 5-4. Freshman Britney Buker led the way by dropping Melody Smith 6-3, 6-2 in singles play then tamed with Kit Chowdhary to defeat Carley Smith and Abby Morris in number one doubles 8-4. Also winning for Gulf Coast was Aliesha Barlow in singles and Mary King/Barlow in doubles.
“I was really proud of the way our women’s team fought against Co-Lin,” Bourgeois said. “We always have tough battles with them and their usually decided by third set tie breakers. This was a good experience for our freshmen because now I think they’ve learned the importance of closing out a match when they get the opportunity.”
Gulf Coast travels to Faulkner State Feb. 26 then returns home to face Northeast Feb. 28.
