Forfeit victory over Miss. Delta sends Gulf Coast to Championship

Ice Asortse (42) and the Bulldogs are one win away from the MACJC Championship.

For the first time since 1999, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will play for the MACJC basketball title.

The way the Bulldogs got to the title game was a strange, three-hour odyssey that had nothing to do with action on the court.

Before Wednesday’s semi-final game with Mississippi Delta began, the MACJC hierarchy was notified that the Trojans had an ineligible player on its active roster, therefore Gulf Coast (19-6) was awarded a victory via forfeit. However the next step for Gulf Coast wasn’t resolved until three hours after the game was forfeited, forcing the Bulldogs to head back to Perkinston not knowing if they had indeed advanced or would instead have to play Jones, the team Delta beat to reach the semi-finals.

Once a decision was made by the MACJC, the Bulldogs began preparing for either Pearl River or East Mississippi in Thursday’s title game at 7:45 p.m. at Co-Lin.

“It’s certainly a situation I’ve never seen before,” said Gulf Coast head coach Wendell Weathers. “We were ready to play today. Now we’ll regroup and get ready to play Thursday.”

The Bulldogs are going after their first MACJC title since 1999.
