Southern-Shreveport ends fantastic season by Bulldogs

CLINTON, MS---This time, an early deficit was too much to overcome for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Southern-Shreveport Community College jumped to a 14-3 lead, held a 13-point halftime advantage, and held off a furious rally by the Bulldogs for a 61-57 win at the Region 23 semi-finals in Clinton.

The loss ends the season for the No. 16 Bulldogs (23-5), the two-time defending MACJC Champions.

In every 2012 post-season game, Gulf Coast has trailed it’s opponents at halftime and come back to win each game. A 19-7 run by the Bulldogs in the second half got them to within one at 54-53 with 3:00 remaining. From there, the Jaguars (21-7) outscored Gulf Coast 7-3 to seal the victory.

Darius Forest and Guy Payne each had 12 points to lead the Bulldogs while Justin Childs had 10 and Angel Matias and Ice Asortse each added 8.

Despite the loss, Gulf Coast won it’s second straight MACJC title and put three players on the All-MACJC and All-Region 23 teams. Angel Matias and Ice Asortse were both All-MACJC South First Team honoree while Justin Childs was an All-MACJC Second Team member. Matias, Asortse, and Childs were all also named to the All-Region 23 squad in 2012.
