Tennis rolls past Holmes

Grant Bell chalked up two wins against Holmes Mar. 28.
The Bulldog men (7-2) took care of Holmes 6-3 as Lachlan Puyol had a big win at number two singles defeating Hunter Boxx of Holmes 6-2, 6-4. Also winning in singles action for Gulf Coast were Nick Georgian, who defeated Parker at number four singles 6-1, 6-0, Grant Bell who took down Jared Lyons at number five singles
6-4, 6-2, and Cameron Wolfe, who topped Grey Tedford 6-1, 6-0. In number one doubles Hale/Boxx of Holmes defeated Puyol/Puyol of Gulf Coast 8-0.
In other doubles action Gulf Coast swept number two and number three doubles as Georgian/Travis Burdick beat Custode/Maccumber 8-2 and Bell/Wolfe of Gulf outplayed Tedford/Lyons of Holmes 8-4.
The women’s team (7-2) volleyed past Holmes 6-2 as Arielle Fischer and Suzy Bowman took number one and number two singles. Fisher defeated Johnna White of Holmes 6-3, 6-2 and Bowman defeated Rebecca Shields 6-3, 2-6, 11-9 in a third set tiebreaker. Also winning in singles for Gulf Coast were McKinsey Boss, who dominated Marlee Herron 6-0, 6-0, and Kaleigh Grantham who cruised past Akai Cabella 6-3, 6-0. In number one doubles Shield and White of Holmes defeated
Fisher/Bowman 8-6. At number two doubles Boss/Grantham defeated Applewhite/Herron 8-4, and at number three doubles Diamond Short and Marlee Triggs dispatched Knapp/Cabella of Holmes 8-2.
“It was a tough match,” said Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois. “Holmes came out really motivated and played hard. They have a good team and will do well at the state tournament. I felt we started off too slowly and it cost us in number one men’s and women’s doubles.”
Gulf Coast returns home Saturday to face Co-Lin at Noon at the Biloxi Tennis Center.
